A STREAM PROJECTED 325 1/2 FEET.
A third-sized Silsby engine has accomplished the remarkable feat of projecting a horizontal stream measuring 325 feet and six inches, through two fifty feet lengths of hose Siamesed with a one and a quarter inch nozzle. To the new steamer just received by Somerville, Mass., belongs the honor of this achievement. The results of a trial of a steamer of the same make at New Haven, on April 19, when under similar conditions a stream was projected to the unprecedented distance of 319 feet, induced the fire authorities of Somerville to order a duplicate of the New Haven steamer to be delivered as soon as manufactured. The steamer was duly constructed and delivered, according to contract, and on Wednesday of last week, it was submitted to a series of trials. In three minutes and twenty seconds, the gauge showed 10 pounds of steam ; in 4 minutes and 30 seconds, 20 pounds; in 5 minutes and 32 seconds, 30 pounds, and in 6 minutes and 30 seconds, water was ejected from the nozzle in a good fire stream, and amid the applause of all. The several tests through hose were then made, the very creditable results being tabulated as follows :
