Massachusetts Medals to Fireman and Citizen

Massachusetts Medals to Fireman and Citizen

On September 15, at fire headquarters on Bristol Street, Boston, Mass., Fire Commissioner Theodore A. Glynn, presented two medals of the Massachusetts Humane Society, a silver medal being given to a citizen and a bronze one to a fireman. The recipients of the honors were John T. Tello, of 261 North Street, Boston, and Laddermdn Carl A. V. Anderson, of ladder 8, Fort Hill Square. The presentation was unusual because of the fact that one of the medals, instead of going to a fire-fighter for saving the life of a citizen, went to a citizen for rescuing a fireman from death.

On July 19 last, Ladderman John Brown, of Ladder Company No. 8, was knocked overboard by a high pressure hose line while engaged in fighting a fire on the fishing boat “America” at a dock on Atlantic Avenue. Tello, a citizen who was on another boat at the wharf, plunged overboard to rescue Brown, who could not swim and was being pulled under by the weight of his rubber coat and boots. Ladderman Anderson also jumped into the water, and after much difficulty he and Tello succeeded in saving Brown, who was unconscious when pulled from the harbor.
