Los Angeles Firemen Rescue Six Men Overcome in Cement Hopper

RESCUE of six workers who were overcome by carbon monoxide high up inside a cement-producing plant challenged the ingenuity of Los Angeles firemen during an hour-and-a-half operation which Division Chief Pat Ferguson told FIRE ENGINEERING was like “making a rescue on the other side of a mountain.” The complicated rescue once again proved the fire service maxim that no matter how much of a preliminary size-up a chief officer makes while responding to an alarm, the probability is always high that unexpected problems will compound the situation. The maxim is especially true in rescue work. Here again, however, the value of thorough training and close teamwork among various fire service element was shown to produce effective results.
