LIGHTNINGRODS RECOMMENDED.

"The old-fashioned lightningrod is a reliable protector against the bolts of Vulcan; but the modern redheaded match is the handmaid of the God of Fire,” says Thomas M. Purtell. the new State fire marshal of Wisconsin. His department has been in existence only about two months; but he has already gathered valuable statistics regarding the origin of fires in his State. "A comparison of the losses on buildings which arc protected by well-constructed lightningrods and those without such protection shows,” ne says, “that the rod is almost a certain safe guard against lightning. During the first twenty days in which reports were received by the department forty fires occurred in the country districts, and of these twenty-nine were caused by lightning, entailing a loss of $40,000. It would almost seem advisable for insurance companies to offer some inducement in the way of lower rates to persons using lightningrods." Marshal Pnrtell says that many fires arc caused in Wisconsin every year by sparks from redheaded matches. Only last week part of the business section of Waterloo was burned by a fire which started from a spark from a redheaded match, and the week before a large business block in Superior burned from the same cause. Safety matches should he used. Marshal Pnrtell says.
