The Appellate division of the Supreme court has reversed a decision which made New York city liable for damages to the amount af $5,900 to the town of Hempstead for the alleged diversion of the waters of the East Meadow and Freeport brooks The suit was brought under the Wallace act of 1898. According to the assistant corporation counsel, the city saved $3,000,000 by the decision.
Chief Engineer Van Keuren, of Jersey City, N. J., has directed the attention of the street and water board to the fact that the city departments waste a large quantity of water. He says tests made with meters show that at the city hall the consumption of water a month is 550,000 gallons; at school No. 9, 757 000 gallons, and at school No. 12, 517,000 gallons. The city hall commissioners and the board of education will receive notice to bring about economy in the use of water. The city is buying water at the rate of $35 a million gallons.
