KANSAS STATE BOARD OF HEALTH IN CHARGE OF WATER SUPPLY.

KANSAS STATE BOARD OF HEALTH IN CHARGE OF WATER SUPPLY.

In Kansas, since the last session of the legislature the State board of health now has charge of the water supplies of the cities and towns over the State. If a town is thinking of making a change in its water supply the board of health steps in and stipulates where the supply is to be secured. If, in the opinion of the hoard, the water supply of any town is unhealthy it orders a change and a change follows. Secretary Crumbine and Prof. O. F. Marvin of Lawrence, have just returned from a trip through the western part of the State inspecting waterworks and sewerage systems. They visited Kingman, Lamed and Ellsworth. Changes are to be made at these places. The people of Ellsworth have found it necessary to secure a new water source. The wells the city has now arc driven and have not sufficient volume to supplv the town. The salt works there take a great amount of water and contaminate a great deal more. A plan had been decided upon to drill new wells at the northern corner of town; but Secretary Crumbine objected, on the ground that the water in the vein these wells would strike is contaminated by the city cess pools. The wells will be driven in the valley of the Smoky Hill river. Kingman will spend $12,000 on a pipe-line. Three miles from town in the sand hills is a spring which throws out a large stream of pure water winter and summer. The city council had talked some of having a pipe-line built from the springs to the city; but there were objections to it because of the cost. Secretary Crumbine recommended that the line be built, and it will be built. The natural fall is sufficient to carry the water into towns with considerable force. There was no waterworks trouble at Earned; hut there was a row on over the location of a sewer opening. No one wanted the new sewer to empty in his neighborhood. Through the intervention of the State officials the sewer will empty into the Pawnee river at a stipulated distance below the town.
