JEWETT CAR FACFORY FIRE AT NEWARK

JEWETT CAR FACFORY FIRE AT NEWARK

A fire that entailed thirty-eight hours hard work for the firemen of Newark, Ohio, and caused a loss of $51,000 to the Jewett Car Company in that city, is reported. The property consisted of a mill, lumber-drying shop and a large quantity of valuable lumber. The cause was supposed to have been due to spontaneous combustion, the fire to have started near the fan in the mill. An employe, going early to work, discovered the fire and rung in an alarm shortly after 5 a. m. As soon as Chief Louis Bauseh reached the scene, and noted the headway the tire had gained, part of the building having already fallen in, he ordered every available line of hose laid and there was an excellent pressure of water available. Five-inch hydrants, three 3-way and two 2-way, furnished eight good streams, which were played effectively on the flames through lJ4-inch nozzles. During the first six hours, the firemen worked in a dense cloud of steam and smoke, and in spite of the terrific heat, the morning was so cold that they were soon encased in ice. It was only by availing himself of the outside help of the volunteer companies and the mill hands’ fire corps, that Chief Bauseh, by working his men in relays, was enabled to keep up the fight that eventually saved the adjoining property. A piece of wort for which the firemen and the volunteer aids are also entitled to great credit, was the salving of some $95,000 worth of finished cars from the the erecting shops, adjoining the burned section. When the firemen had finally obtained the upper hand of the fire in the buildings, and the danger of its spreading was past, they turned their attention to the salving ot the lumber and costly hardwoods, which, stacked in piles in the dry sheds, burned stub bornly. Mere. too. they were finally success ful. after many hours of the hardest work, in which they used 3 combination hose wagons, a hose reel and a hook and ladder truck and laid 4,000 feet of cotton rubber-lined hose. two lengths of which hurst during the fire. Only to the indefatigable and well-directed work of the firemen and the excellent water supply at their command, the car company owes the salvation of a vestige of its plant and ungrudg ing credit is accorded Chief Bauseh and his men for their splendid efforts.
