J. J. Whalen New Chief of Fast St. Louis, Ill.
J. J. Whalen, who was appointed chief of the fire department of East St. Louis, Ill., following the death of Chief Bolte, and whose portrait is presented herewith, has been in the service of the fire department of that city for fourteen years. He passed through practically all of the grades of the fire department before his appointment as its head. This took place on March 30, when his choice was announced by the fire and police board of East St. Louis. The chief is forty-two years of age and is married.
