Hurt by Disobeying Chief’s Orders
The proprietors of the Ingram and Kail apartment buildings in Chicago, as well as tenants of the buildings, suffered a heavy loss by a fire which totally destroyed the structures and contents. Chief Seyferlich said that the fire originated in the Ingram, a five-story brick building, 25 years old, and located in the loop district of the city, where it occupied a space of 200 feet by 100. It was provided with two fire escapes. The width of the street in front of the burned property is 80 feet, on which were laid 24, 12 and 10-inch mains. The fire, which started from an unknown cause, was discovered by a citizen at 2:03 a. m., when the first alarm was turned in. The department was promptly on hand, and on its arrival found the building burning fiercely. The blaze was fought with 32 engines, five hook and ladder trucks, one water tower, manned by 500 men. With a gale blowing from the northwest, the Kail building burned rapidly and was practically gutted. A score of firemen who disobeyed Chief Seyferlich’s orders by going near the wall of the Kail building that fell in, nere injured. Twenty-five 4-inch hydrants were available, the pressure at each being 25 pounds from the direct-pumping system. A committee is investigating the inadequacy of the Chicago water supply. Thirty-two engine streams were thrown with 1 1/4-inch nozzles. Sixteen thousand feet of cotton rubber-lined hose were laid. The value of the property destroyed was $75,000, and contents. $250,000. The loss on both was total.
