ALTHOUGH petroleum was known in classic times to the Persians, Greeks and Romans, it was not until as late in our own time as the year 1860, that it was utilized for commercial purposes. To-day, in America, crude petroleum enters into the field of commercial enterprise to the extent of more than forty millions of barrels per annum, and the exports of its products amount in value to upwards of fifty millions of dollars a year.

With a commodity of so vast proportions offering peculiarly dangerous elementsof combustion, entering so largely into our domestic life, we may well pause to investigate the science of extinguishing all fires, with which we are so frequently called upon to do battle.
