HIGH PRESSURE MAINS FOR CHICAGO.

The following is an outline of the purposes of the Palmer commission on high pressure fire protection for Chicago. Its general purpose is to ascertain the standard of high-pressure fire protection which would be applied to congested districts to remove exposure and conflagration hazard, and what requirements of installation and maintenance should be complied with so as to satisfy thoroughly insurance and anticipate future needs. The work to be considered is outlined as follows by H. B. Seely, secretary of the commission :

"The arrangement of separate mains and pumping stations which will suffice without intervention of steamers. The devices which should be placed in each kind of building in connection with the main to prevent its becoming the source of danger to its occupants or its neighbors.
