Half a Block Burned in Butler, Pa.

Half a Block Burned in Butler, Pa.

The Butler Citizen says: When the fire broke out in this town last Saturday morning, the gate between the reservoir and the falling main was closed in order to relieve the pressure on the pipes. A courier on horseback, however, soon had it opened, and as the water supply was not very large, both pumps at the Engine-house were started. To keep them going a tremendous fire had to be made under the boilers, and several rods of a neighboring rail fence were appropriated for the occasion.

If ever new rubber hose had a severe testing, that belonging to this town had one last Friday night. After the gates to and from the reservoir were closed, and the water pumped directly from the Engines through the pipes, the strain was immense, and yet the hose stood it without a single crack or tear. This hose was manufactured by the New Jersey Car Spring and Rubber Company, of Jersey City, and furnished to the town by the firm of J. G. & W. Campbell, and is the best manufactured in the world.
