Government Fire Department at Rock Island.

The United States government is going to be asked to maintain a fire company at the lower point of Rock Island. Ill., arsenal with an auxiliary steamer, to cooperate with the fire departments of the tri-cities in fighting fires. This is the import of a recommendation from George W. Newberry, chief of the Rock Island department. Chief Newberry has conferred with the department heads of Davenport and Moline, and they are agreed that the government company is a public necessity. In the past the departments of the tricities have aided the government when there were fires on the arsenal island. On the strength of Chief Newberry’s recommenda tion the fire committee with Aldermen McNcaly and Stephens, were delegated to meet with Commandant F. E. Hobbs at Rock Island arsenal and ascertain his views on the matter and, if possible, his cooperation in securing the establishment of the government department.
