A test made on the pump showed a capacity of 2,300 gallons per minute. Early in the spring, tests were conducted with sawdust, sand and chemicals, to determine their relative values as fire extinguishers for naphtha and rubber cement The sawdust proposition appeared so unreasonable to those who had not seen the first small test, that it was decided to give a test on a larger scale. To this end a steel pan six feet wide, eight feet long and six inches deep was secured. In this pan naphtha was poured to a depth of four inches, was ignited and allowed to burn one minute. Two barrels of sand were then applied but were unable to extinguish the fire. The fire was now allowed to burn out and the pan to cool. Continuing the experiment, the pan was again filled to a depth of four inches and again allowed to burn for one minute. Onehalf barrel of sawdust was now applied and the fire extinguished in forty-five seconds. This in spite of the handicap of a very high wind which whipped the flames in all directions, driving back the men who were handling the shovels. As a result of this test, the company organized a sawdust fire company, which has been a very valuable addition to the factory brigade. J. W. Myers is chief and A. B.
