Good Record of Steel Pipe

Good Record of Steel Pipe

During the past summer a seven-foot steel pipe between Baden and Chain of Rocks intake, St. Louis, was emptied and examined. The interior, for practically the entire length of 19,000 feet, was in as good condition as when it was laid in 1907. At a few high points, not under water at all times, where air tends to collect, there were small pin spots of rust through the coating, but no pitting had thus far developed. At five of the manholes and at the gate chambers, where the pipe is exposed to air, larger rust spots and slight pitting were found. At Maline Creek Bridge, where the pipe is exposed to the atmosphere, the coating has been loosened and some rust and piting shown. At many points, below the usual waterline, where the coating is loose and the steel is exposed, no corrosion has taken place. The exterior of the pipe, about 1,500 feet south of Maline Creek Bridge, was uncovered. The coating was in practically perfect condition and only a few small rust spots were observed. Pitting was negligible. A part of the pipe line was coated with mineral rubber pipe coating and part with an inferior asphaltic base coating.
