GAS MASKS FOR FIRE FIGHTING.

GAS MASKS FOR FIRE FIGHTING.

Possibly the greatest hazard in connection with the fighting of fire is the hazard which is apparent immediately upon entering the building. It is usual to find the smoke so dense that it is almost impossible to ascertain internal conditions. Great loss of property follows as a result of the fact that the exact seat of the fire cannot be determined and water must be thrown before the exact place where it is needed can be discovered. Serious loss of life among firemen, and great injury to health has always been evidenced. Many persons overcome by smoke have lost their lives on account of the fact that they could not be reached with safety. The United States Government has at very great expense perfected the gas mask used in the army service for the protection of life against almost all gas hazards. The war being over, this wonderful service can be harnessed to good effect in the protection of life and property, with very slight change of composition in the filter of the mask.

The equipment is made most effective for this particular branch of service. At the Nela Park Gas Defense Station, Cleveland, Ohio, and under the direction of Colonel F. M. Dorsey of the United States service, I made careful tests of the improved mask as equipped and find the latest development most satisfactory. In the testing room, which was about 6 by 6 feet, where a smudge of the worst type was manufactured from wood and asphaltum, I was able to remain without any discomfort for 43 minutes. This might have been increased had it not been for the fact that I had an engagement compelling me to leave.
