Former Chief of Poughkeepsie Dies

Ex-Chief Fred S. Bieber, who was elected at the head of the Poughkeepsie, N. Y., volunteer fire department on Jan. 1, 1898, died in that city recently. Chief Bieber was born in 1859, being educated in the public schools of the city and after learning the cabinet maker’s trade he joined the Phoenix Hose Company in 1888 and the following year received an appointment in the New York fire department, serving on Hook and Ladder No. 15 until 1891, when he resigned. He then returned to Poughkeepsie and was elected as asssistant foreman of the Phoenix Hose Company. He was promoted to foreman in 1892, from which post he was elevated to the position of chief. He served as the head of the department until 1901. Mr. Bieber was a member of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association, New York State Firemen’s Association, the Permanent Firemen’s Association of New York State and the Permanent Firemen’s Association of Poughkeepsie.

Gilbert S. Inman, superintendent of the Providence, R. I., fire alarm service, died at his home in that city on March 3, at the age of fifty years. He had been a member of the fire department more than twenty-nine years, becoming assistant superintendent of the fire alarm system on March 16. 1909, with the retirement of Charles G. Cloudman, April 1, 1909, being promoted to the superintendency.
