Foamed Plastic Makers Agree to Warn Customers
The Federal Trade Commission has provisionally accepted consent orders requiring 25 manufacturers to alert users of cellular (or foamed) plastic products to the serious hazards these products may present in case of fire and to establish a $5 million public research program into the flammability of these products. These plastics are widely used as construction materials and in furniture.
The commission also proposed a trade regulation rule establishing uniform rules governing representations as to the flammability characteristics of cellular plastics. One of the provisional orders cites 25 producers of these products, and the other cites The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc., 200 Park Avenue, New York City, a trade association.
