FIREPROOF BRICK.

FIREPROOF BRICK.

(Specially written for FIRE AND WATER).

THERE are those who still labor under the delusion that because a material, such as brick, or stone, or terra cotta, is noncombustible and will not, ignite, it is, therefore, fireproof and can fire freely used as such in the construction of so-called fireproof buildings. It is true that a building so constructed may be non-combustible, but it by no means follows that it is fireproof—that is to say, not in danger of collapsing under the influence of intense heat either from within or from without. In reality the whole question of fireproofness in an iron building depends altogether upon the strength and powers of heat-resistance possessed by the materials which are used for inclosing, lining, or otherwise protecting the iron or steel framework.
