Firemen’s Life Insurance.
消防员,他们商业的本质s, exposed to unusual risks, their lives being in peril whenever called out for duty. It is seldom that a “big fire ” occurs that it is not attended by the killing or maiming of one or more Firemen. As these men serve for little or no compensation, devoting their time and imperilling their lives for the benefit of others, it should be the duty of the communities in which they serve to provide for them in case they meet with accidents, and for their families where death ensues. In fact, Firemen should be provided with pensions by communities, as soldiers are by the Government. But the public has not yet been educated up to such an appreciation of; the services of the Firemen as will warrant such action. It therefore remains for the men to make such provisions for their families if they can. Most of them are men of moderate means, generally mechanics, who ! are unable to pay the high rates for life | insurance which the good companies exact, and experience teaches that cheap insurance | is worse than none, for it not only does not | insure, but it robs its victims of their hardj earned savings.
To afford Firemen an opportunity for insuring their lives, the “ Firemen’s Life Association, of New York,” was organized some years ago. The plan of operation is similar to that which has been so successful with the police force of this city. Membership in the Association is acquired by the payment of from $3 to $6, according to age. Then, upon the death of any member, all the others are assessed $1.10, which amounts go to make up a fund for the benefit of the family of the deceased member. This gives to each member a life insurance which is sure, at a small cost, the proceeds of which are dependent upon the number of contributing members. What the membership of the New York Association is we do not know, but understand it to be large. It should embrace every Fireman in the State, and it should be a matter of pride with them to know that the family of a deceased member is abundantly provided for. This Association is endorsed by the State Association of Firemen, and by prominent Firemen in all sections of the country. Its operations are not confined to this State, but Firemen in any locality can become members and enjoy all its privileges upon payment of the very small sum mentioned. Elsewhere we print a statement of the Association, together with a list of its officers. The standing of these gentlemen is sufficient guarantee that the Association is worthy the confidence of all Firemen.
