A firefighter involved in saving a man trapped for 20 hours over the weekend in a cave at Maquoketa Caves State Park described the rescue toThe Quad-City Times(http://bit.ly/LoMe2I).
Davenport firefighter Amy Priest–who is 5 foot six and weighs 140 pounds–discussed firefighters’ actions during the operation. She described how responders took turns crawling through 300 feet of twists and turns to rescue the 20-year-old victim. Priest was one of the few rescuers small enough to make physical contact witht he victim.
Dozens of firefighters participated in the confined-space incident, including rescue teams from the Quad-Cities and as far away as Cedar Rapids, as well as volunteers from the Maquoketa area.
Crews used a makeshift harness and attached a rope under the victim to free him. A team of eight firefighters pulled the rope to dislodge the victim from where he was stuck.
