Investigators with the West Virginia Fire Marshal’s office were working Saturday to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed the home of Wayne County Sheriff Greg Farley, reports The Herald-Dispatch.
No one was home along Right Fork Camp Creek Road when the fire was reported at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, and the house was engulfed in flames when members of the Lavalette Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene, according to a member of the department.
The firefighter said the fire was so powerful that they could only contain it as it burned Farley’s home in the northern end of the county.
Firefighters from Green Valley and Ceredo volunteer fire departments also responded to the scene.
While battling the fire, a Lavalette firefighter was injured as several firefighters attempted to remove ammunition that was inside Farley’s home, the member said.
The firefighter was struck in the neck by a stray bullet that was released when a wall collapsed on the box it was in, according to a Facebook post by a member of the department.
The firefighter was transported to a local hospital and released Saturday morning.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Saturday evening, and it had not been ruled as being suspicious.
