The flames spread to the stable, badly damaging the interior and some contents. The origin is supposed to have started from a spark reaching the gasolene, which had leaked from car. The automobile cost $2,000.

Pleading guilty to firing a stack of straw, John Shinn, a laboring man, was sentenced at the Suffolk, England, assizes, to seven years’ penal servitude. The prisoner gave as his only reason for firing the stack that “the devil wras in him.” Mr. Justice Grantham retorted that they must try and drive the devil out,, or place the prisoner where he would not be allowed to do the devil’s work.

At South Boston, on January 9, fire in one of a group of five six-storv brick warehouses, owned by the Factory Buildings Trust, at the corner of Wormwood and A streets, caused a loss of between $125,000 and $150,000. The fire started from spontaneous combustion in a hale of wool on the third floor, and, although efforts were made promptly to put out the fire with buckets of water. the employes were driven out. Five alarms, including one on the automatic circuit, were given, calling practically all of the fire apparatus in the centre of the city to the scene, including a fireboat. and the force was sufficient to confine the flames to the building in which they originated. Low water pressure and freezing weather hampered the firemen. After the fire was partly under control, it was found that water thrown upon the roof of the warehouse buildings had run down through the shops occupied by the Hallet & Davis Piano company and had damaged sounding boards, piano cases and other valuable material to the extent of between $50,000 and $75,000. The Railway Supply company’s loss was estimated at more than $50,000, and the loss on the building, it was believed, would bring the total up to nearly $150,000.
