ST. JOHN, N. B. WATERWORKS.

1.34; house services, etc., 85.18; stop-cocks, 7,177; service pipes, 5.831 ; meters, 201 (Crown, Hersey and Worthington). The city is divided into two separate portions by the broad and deep waters of the St. John river ters of the St. John river and harbor of the same name. For this reason the water supplies are derived from two distinct sources, twelve miles apart, situate in opposite directions, with the city between. The East Side is supplied through two twenty-four-inch pipes and one twelve-inch pipe, all of cast iron, from Little reservoir—an artificial lake, five miles distant, with a capacity of about 122,000.000 gallons and formed bv damming the valley and causing the water of Little river to expand to an extent of fiftyfive and one-third acres. The West Side is supplied through 4.8 miles of cement lined twelveinch pipe and five and a half miles of twenty-fourinch cast iron pipe from Spruce and Ludgate lakes, an extensive expanse of water still retaining the two distinctive names, but united into one sheet by the building of a dam at the outlet of the lower lake (Spruce lake) in the year 1866, and consequent raising of its water to and above the former level of Ludgate lake. A distribution reservoir is situated at the termination of the West Side twenty-four-inch main. The elevation of its surface is generally kept at about 159 feet above high-water datum, St. John harbor, and its capacity is about 1.500.000 gallons. The inlet pipe, since the laying of the twenty-four-inch main, has been kept shut to prevent overflowage, and a check-valve placed on the outlet pipe to prevent back-flow to the reservoir, and to make its delivery automatic in case of a falling off in pressure. The mode of supply is gravitation, with an auxiliary pump for high-service on the Little river system, actuated by waterpower at Silver Falls. The population at the census of 1901 was as follows: East Side, 36,281; West Side, 4.430—40,711.
