FIRE NEWS

An early morning fire completely destroyed the Buckner’s Orphans’ Home, near Dallas, Tex. Sixteen children were cremated and nine injured, three of them fatally. There were 147 boys and more than 100 girls in the home, but all are accounted for. The fire was discovered about midnight. Mrs. Britton, the boys’ matron, had been in bed some time when she was awakened by the smell of smoke. She jumped to the floor, but found it so hot she could not stand on it, and she immediately raised the cry of fire. The fire is believed to have originated in the room under that occupied by Mrs. Britton. Before Mrs. Britton retired for the night she had the boys clean out and prepare a stove situated in the room just under her. for the morning fire. The building was soon destroyed, and at daylight the work of searching the rooms was taken up. All the children were accounted for by noon. The home is ten miles from Dallas, and it would have been impossible to get aid out in time had it been requested. In endeavoring to rescue the orphans the matron neglected to save her own children, three in number, all of whom perished.

The newly opened Grand Opera house burned at Winnipeg, Man. Loss $40,000. The adjoining Hotel Manitoba was saved only by flooding its interior with water
