FIRE INSURANCE, FIRE WASTE AND FIRE PROTECTION
At the fifth annual meeting of the Indiana Sanitary and Water Supply Association, a paper on the above subject was read by Richard Lieber, chairman of the mayor's commission on fire insurance rating, Indianapolis, of which the following are excerpts:
What is the matter with fire insurance? Not a new question altogether, but one that still awaits an answer, which carries with it a suggestion of the solution of difficulties we are laboring under. We can generalize and say that fire insurance could be had like so many other good things at a very reasonable price were it not for our extravagant and wasteful habits of handling and buying the same. Is it the fault of the companies? Certainly so, but equally as much our own. Fire insurance in this country is almost prohibitively high. But why? What are the underlying reasons?
