Fire Fighter Death Rate Highest Again

Fire fighters in the United States in 1975 once again suffered the highest on-the-job death rate in the nation—90 deaths per 100,000 fire fighters—according to findings released in the annual death and injury survey of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

President W. Howard McClennan of the IAFF noted that 108 fire fighters were killed in the line of duty last year, eight more than in 1974 and 18 more than in 1973, as reported by local units. The rate was six times the rate of 15 deaths per 100,000 in “all industries” and twice the 45 per 100,000 rate suffered by police last year.
