He also recommends that the change of the fire alarm system to central office system be made as soon as possible. Classifying the alarms,they were as follows: Five hundred and twenty-five by fire alarm telegraph; 212 still alarms; sixty-seven by telephone. twenty-two by American District Telegraph; thirteen personal services, and one first alarm call; also ten second alarms; two third alarms; four second and third alarms combined; and twenty-three special calls. The department has traveled, in response to alarms, 5,810 miles, making a total distance traveled both ways of 11,620 miles, being an average of 187 and one-half miles to each apparatus. Engine companies stretched 439.550 feet of hose, or about eighty-three miles. Engine Co. No. 3 stretched the largest amount, 39,550. Hook and ladder and chemical companies have raised 19,317 feet of ladders; hook and ladders, chemicals, and hose wagons carrying small chemicals, h«ve discharged 326 tanks; and hose wagons with combination chemical attachment have discharged 180 tanks—making a grand total of chemicals used of about 22,677 gallons. The total amount of hour services at fires has been 4,728:20, an average of seventy-five hours; fifteen minutes to each company. Eighteen persons were rescued from burning buildings by officers and men of the department. The salvage corps continues to keep up its good name in the way of good services as usually rendered by such organizations. The cost of maintenance was comparatively small, when the saving to property owners and insurance companies is taken into consideration. Under the able superintendance of Mr. John T. Ruane, superintendent, salvage corps company No. 1 has responded, during the year 1897. to 314 alarms; worked at fires 260 hours and thirty-five minutes; spread 756 covers; and used twenty-eight small chemicals, or about 196 gallons of chemicals.
