Fire Cadets Get Taste of Reality
A fire cadet program for high school seniors has been implemented by the Ventura County, Calif., Fire Department under the leadership of Chief Stan Masson. Designed as an exploratory experience for young men who have expressed an interest in the fire service as a career, the program is enthusiastically endorsed by 10 high schools in the department’s jurisdiction.
The selection process and the rules and regulations governing the cadets were established by a committee after much research and planning. Our high school districts provide career guidance and work experience courses, which are the vehicle for the schools to offer five credits per semester for a minimum of 10 hours a week in the fire cadet program. Each school provides insurance for the participating cadets, and both the fire department and the schools monitor the program for satisfactory performance by each individual. Cadets receive no monetary benefits and participation is strictly voluntary.
