火与水
匹兹堡报纸,都是or less violently partisan, one way or the other, have recently been greatly concerned as to the future of Chief Humphreys. Some have had it that he was about to resign his position as head of the fire bureau in order to run for the office of city recorder (mayor) of the city; others, that the present recorder was about to strip him of his office! The former story Chief Humphreys promptly and emphatically denied. In the case of the latter, the wish which was father to the thought inspires the report, which was, of course, set afloat to embarrass the chief and force the hand of a certain political party. Chief Humphreys meanwhile keeps the even tenor of his way, obeying orders, and, with his firemen, remaining outside of politics, serves his fellow citizens by devoting his attention simply and solely to the work of the fire department, and seeing that his men follow his example and leave politics severely alone.
审美主义在这里都很好。但是,当它与人类生命的安全竞争时,它是不合适的。因此。Agatha’s school at the southwest corner of West End avenue and Eightyseventh street, Manhattan, on the ground that other wise 200 young lives would be endangered in case of a fire breaking out. The disgruntled signatories of a formidable petition to the contrary, who held that the alleged disfigurement of the building would bring down the value of the adjacent property, be longed for the most part to the same West End association which, for the same reason, a few years ago thwarted the city in its plan of building a hook and ladder house near St. Agnes’ church, in spite of the fact that there had just then occurred a sad loss of life at a fire in that neighborhood—a sacrifice to the lack of a hook and ladder truck being stationed near enough to reach the scene of the disaster in time to prevent the catastrophe. Supt. Stewart’s stiff backbone in the matter of the fire escapes is worthy of all praise, as, perhaps, some of the aesthetic kickers of today may have good reason acknowledging in the near future.
