Ex-Chief Thomas F. Nevins Is 75

Ex-Chief Thomas F. Nevins, of Brooklyn, N. Y., quietly observed his 75th birthday last week at his residence, 850 Clinton street. Chief Nevins, who is hale and hearty, was the second chief of the paid fire department of Brooklyn from November 1, 1870 to March 10, 1894. The paid department of that borough, which was annexed to New York in 1898, was organized September 16, 1869, John Cunningham, who had been chief of the volunteer department since 1863, being its first chief. Chief Nevins was also one of the organizers of the International Association of Fire Engineers and its first treasurer, He was an intimate friend of Henry Ward Beecher and Mark Twain. He entered the Brooklyn volunteer department when 17 years of age, was foreman of a fire company and an assistant engineer a few years later. Nevins was chief of the denartment when he was 27 years of age.
