No one was hurt when afire broke out on a 300-foot bargein the Delaware Bay early Monday, officials said.

The fire ignited around 1 a.m. near Bombay Hook Point, Delaware, on an unmanned barge carrying household appliances and scrap metal, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The fire was visible from New Jersey.

Six fire boats from local fire companies knocked down the blaze with the help of a Coast Guard 29-foot response boat, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though there is no evidence that the incident polluted the bay, the Coast Guard said.

“Our highest priority is ensuring the safety of firefighters and response personnel on scene,” said Capt. Jonathan Theel, who serves as sector Delaware Bay captain of the port. “We will also work to mitigate any environmental threats and protect the flow of commerce within this vital port.”

Boaters should avoid the area, officials said.
