In the efforts to subdue a fourmonths’-old fire at the Manchester (England) gas works, over 5,000 tons of sand were used. The fire was located in a dump of waste coke, oxides, pitch and other carbon residuals. In order to minimize the annoyance caused by sulphur fumes, the application of lime was advised.
