Demonstration of Fire Appliances at San Francisco Exposition

Murphy, for the benefit of chiefs and others en route to the annual convention of the Pacific Coast Chiefs Association, held last week at Victoria, B. C. Among those present were Chiefs R. B. Hawcroft, of Reno, Nev,; M. D. Murphy, of Stockton; J. Snyder, of Riverside; J. G. Wintermute, of Fresno, and Chief J. E. Shrewsbury, of Long Beach. Also assistant Chief G. H. O’Donnell, of Los Angeles. A large number of people saw the demonstration. Among the most interesting feats was the throwing of a two-inch stream from the top of the Tower of Jewels a distance of 435 feet, with a high water pressure of 335 pounds. At 2 o’clock Chief Murphy turned in an alarm, and in 64 seconds five motor hose wagons arrived front different sections of the grounds. Then followed a series of daring and quick-action exhibits on the part of the men. under the direction of Captain Charles Cullen. Rescue work with life lines, pompier ladders and net and the raising of an American flag by means of a line shot from a rifle to the fifth floor of a fire station followed. Front the various places demonstrations of high pressure streams were given. A successful trial of overhead sprinklers and automatic alarms was made in the Transportation building. The visitors were taken to and from the exposition grounds on the fircboat David Scannell. An automobile trip through the city preceded the afternoon programme, and in the evening the chiefs attended the Orpheum in a body, after which they were entertained at supper. They left the next day for Victoria by boat.
