With a few minutes in which to work, much of the property was saved. The firemen made a skillful fight, and it was due to their good work that that entire section was not destroyed. Many times it seemed that the rear of the frame house facing Queen street would be swept away, but whenever this danger threatened the firemen met it promptly and turned it back. The course of the flames was directly south, but fortunately there was no wind blowing, and the fire was checked when it reached the brick walls of the rear of the buildings facing on West King street. All the buildings were of brick and wood. The department had in service a Robinson motor hose-chemical wagon, two hose reels and a motor combination ladder truck. Twelve streams, one ⅝ and one inch nozzles and an Eastern deluge set stream wire on the fire with 8 double 4inch hydrants, 150 feet apart to draw from. The water pressure was from 80 to 100 pounds. Water mains are 10 inches. Only hydrant streams were used. Two of the horses that lost their lives were “Grandpa” and “Monkey,” which were used by Engine Company No. 3 at the St. Louis Exposition in 1904 and were purchased by Martinsburg for its fire department the following year. They were kept in the Owen stable during reconstruction of the fire station to accommodate the new motor ladder truck. The president of the Citizens National Bank has sent the following letter to the Mayor of Martinsburg: “The officers of our bank who were on the ground and saw the cheerful and efficient work of our fire department in their efforts to save and protect our property are deeply grateful for this service rendered. I w.sh you would convey to the department our thanks and appreciation. I take pleasure and a great deal of satisfaction in handing you herewith our cheek for $1,000, which we feel can be used by the tire department at this time.”
