Extending the Uselulness of Firemen.
To the Editor: From time to time various municipalities jump into prominence in the fire department field by freakish inquisitions which they force upon firemen. Not long ago in a certain city a new politically appointed fire commissioner thought it would be a good idea to make the "shiftless” firemen clean streets during their idle hours. Another theoretically efficient board of fire commissioners figured the firemen could do all the repair work for other departments during their spare time.
