Conflagration at Brazil
At Brazil, Ind., recently, a fire which started at 2 a. m. in the front end of the second story of the Brosius Dry Goods Company store spread to adjoining buildings. A minute after the fire was discovered a terrific explosion took place in the front end of the Brosius store and immediately the whole building was in flames and fire spread to the D. H. Davis block, on the east; the “News-Democrat” building, across the alley at the north, and the Moore & Ferguson store, on the west. An hour later the flames creeped into the big threestory Ayer-McCarel building and threatened to eat its way east toward the Winklepleck building and the Davis Hotel. At 2.30 o’clock Terre Haute was telephoned for assistance and Engine 3, in command of Assistant Chief Michael Hines, left by railroad at 3.55, and the run of 16 miles was made in eleven minutes. The apparatus was not taken from the car, but some of its hose was used. The fire burned for four hours. Chief Urban was in command.
