Chief O'Hagan of New York Named Fire Commissioner
Almost nine years to the month that he was appointed chief of department, John T. O’Hagan was sworn in as New York City’s 21st fire commissioner by Mayor John V. Lindsay on October 11.
The ceremonies were held in the 200-year-old Board of Estimate chamber in city hall, which was packed with friends and well-wishers of the new commissioner. As the flash bulbs popped and the TV cameras whirred, Mayor Lindsay called O’Hagan the country’s “No. 1 fire fighter” and added that “there is not a fire department in the nation where his name is not known.”
