Jul. 11—More than 100 firefighters responded to a two-alarm blaze that killed two pets and left an apartment building uninhabitable on Manchester’s West Side Sunday.
Manchester fire crews responded to reports of a fire at 361 Hevey St. around 3 p.m. Sunday.
Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the third floor of the apartment building, and a second alarm was struck, drawing off-duty city firefighters and crews from surrounding communities.
Manchester Battalion Chief Bob Beaudet said the building, home to at least six to eight people, suffered heavy smoke, fire and water damage, and was deemed uninhabitable.
A dog and cat died in the blaze, Beaudet said.
One Manchester firefighter was treated for dehydration, and he is expected to be ready for his next shift, Beaudet said. One civilian was transported from the scene for treatment of possible smoke inhalation.
Their condition was unknown Sunday night.
The cause of the fire was under investigation Sunday night.
Initial damage estimates were pegged at at least $200,000, Beaudet said.
