Various Types of Filters Used to Protect Engine Oil
Apparatus Maintenance
We buy a good grade of oil to properly lubricate the engines in our fire apparatus, but the first time we step on the starter, we also start the process of oil contamination. This comes from several sources: intake air improperly filtered, as we discussed in FIRE ENGINEERING last month, fuel dilution from choking and incomplete combustion in a cold engine, water condensation plus the moisture from fuel combustion, acids from fuel combustion, and the formation of carbon. Wear particles, iron or steel and copper, also enter the oil.
