The subject of Fig. page 336 was born on the 1st day of April, 1859, and raised in the southern part of New Jersey wherehe received a liberal public school education.
At his New Jersey home he was taught the trade of a carpenter and builder, where he followed his occupation during his younger years, at the same time devoting his evenings and spare time to the study of law, and after reaching manhood moved to the City of New York, where he followed his trade for nearly three years, being engaged in the construction of some of the best buildings in that city.
