布雷斯南酋长的新发明。
我们在这个问题的一个illu火和水stration showing the working of the Bresnan Hose Hoist, to which we have referred heretofore. For a tool so simple it accomplishes more work than almost any other we ever saw. It is both a time and labor saver, as by its use two men can easily and quickly do the work that has heretofore taken half a dozen men three times as long to accomplish. It is specially designed for the purpose of elevating hose to the roofs of buildings or other lofty places, but can be used with equal success in hoisting ladders or anything else, or in raising hose for interior service when desired. It is so constructed that it anchors itself on the cornice of a building, and the greater the weight put upon it the firmer it becomes. Rollers are placed on the arc of a circle, over which the hose is drawn, thus giving it a free and clear run, the rollers overcoming the friction that results from dragging hose over the sharp edge of a cornice or window ledge. The difference in these two methods is just the difference there is between drawing hose over the sharp edge of a right angle and over a pulley ten inches in diameter. We were recently on a roof when this tool was used to hoist two lengths of heavy rubber hose. The rope was lowered, the hose made fast to it, when two men on the roof drew it up with ease, the horns of the couplings, which usually catch in the cornice, passing over the rollers without any trouble. In about one minute the men had the two sections on the roof, and a stream of water playing through the hose. Ordinarily it would have taken an entire company to have dragged the line up the stairs, turning innumerable corners, and consumed from fifteen to thirty minutes to get it in the position the two men placed it in in two minutes. This tool not only simplifies and accelerates the work of the men, but it obviates the desttuction of the cornice by dragging heavy hose over it, and saves great wear and tear on the hose. The tool can be used inside for lifting hose through the well of the stairway, by attaching it to the upper bannister, thus making a straight lift instead of dragging the hose up the staits. It is equally serviceable for ladder work, and may be used for elevating ladders, for drawing them up to the roof, or fer drawing up hose over the ladder when it is desirable to take a line into a window. Men on the roof do the work, and it is not necessary to station men at intervals on the ladder to “ light up on that hose ” or to sustain the weight of it. This is accomplished by reversing the tool, as shown in the illustration, at the top of the ladder. Where it becomes necessary to work on the roof, this tool is worth at least six men, and lightens the labors of the rest at least one-half. A veteran chief who saw the various uses this tool can be put to, said : “ Here we have been lifting the stuffing out of ourselves all our lives, and never had the gumption to get up a thing of this kind. It will save firemen the hardest part of their work, and that is tugging hose to the top of buildings.”
Chief Foley of Milwaukee says: “ It is just the thing I have been lookingfor for many years,” and the officers and men in this department are enthusiastic over it.
