Specially written for FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING.
Two recent deaths have altered the roster of Chicago’s leading companies in the great fire of 1871, as published at the beginning of 1906, in FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING. Maurice W. (Sandy) Shay, retired fire inspector, who died in Cleveland, Ohio, in March, was foreman of the “A. D. Titsworth” No. 13. Timothy A. Moynihan, who died the other day in Chicago, while engineer of No. 2, was engineer in 1871 of the “Long John” No. 1. Alfred Pendleton, retired, is the only survivor of No. 13. He was a pipeman. William E. Hand, captain of truck 29, is the only man left out of the crew of “Long John” engine No. 1. He was her driver.
The Chicago firemen should at least memorise the following facts: In 1857, Chicago’s first great fire occurred on Lake street near River, and the bells that sounded the requiem for the seventeen victims of falling roofs and shattered walls rang as well the death-knell in the “Garden City” of the volunteer fire department. The paid fire department followed in the wake of the fire of 1857, which incontrovertibly demonstrated the inadequacy of the volunteer system. Chief Engineer Silas McBride cried out for the last time, “Put none but Americans on guard tonight”—the slogan of the KnowNothing days. He then sat down on the edge of a wooden sidewalk and wept tears that discolored the red shirt that he would never wear again in the interest of the people and for glory. While he sobbed, the herculean firefighter caressed tenderly the white helmet presented to him on that exciting occasion, when one of h machines, the “Red Rover,” got first water and not only threw it higher than New York’s topnotcher, but washed its hardy company out of sight. “Didn’t the girls cheer, that day?”
Harris。” She ran from the present location of engine company No. 7, whose captain is Frank Campion, son of the present fire chief.
J. Swenie。
D. J. Swenie, “Ihe Grand Old Man,” succeeded Benner. He was the most popular chief Chicago ever had, and served from 1879 to 1901. While living, his portrait was lmng in the council chambers, and it is there yet—an honor accorded to no other.
Eugene Sweeney, chief of Seventh; James Heaney, chief of Eighth; Thomas O’Connor, chief of Ninth; David Mahoney, chief of Tenth; Patrick Donahoe, chief of Eleventh; Joseph Kenyon, chief of Twelfth; Frederick Gabriel, chief of Thirteenth; Michael Driscoll, chief of Fourteenth; John Lynch, chief of Fifteenth; John Hannon, chief of Sixteenth; John Fitzgerald, chief of Seventeenth.
Nicholl,1840年;A. E. Peck,1847年和1848年;A. Gilbert,1849年;C. P. Bradley,1850年和1851年; U. P. Harris, in 1852 and 1833; J. M. Donnelly, in 1854; Silas McBride, in 1853 (when there was a “Know-Nothing” mayor), 1856 and 1837; D. J. Swenie, in 1858. He served through 1858 as the first marshal of the paid fire department, while he was the last chief engineer of the volunteers. U. P. Harris served from 1859 to 1867; R. A. Williams, from 1867 to 1873; Matt. Benner, from 1873 to 1879; D. J. Swenie, from 1879 to 1901; Wm. H. Musham, from 1901 to 1904.; John Campion became fire chief in October, 1904.
An appropriation being considered the other day by the city council for a veterinary surgeon at $2,000 and a superintendent of horses at $1,500. Herman J. Otten, superintendent of horses, easily convinced the finance committee that a regular veterinary surgeon was only seldom required by him. He said he cared for 342 horses, the cost to the city of treating which by himself was less than $4.43 per-capita—medicine included, while, with a regular veterinary surgeon, the cost would be $6,64 per horses—medicine not included. He had treated 193 horses in three months and had to call in a veterinary surgeon but twice, and he confirmed his diagnosis and treatment. Mr. Otten. who gets $2,400 oer annum, submitted quite a long list of leading firms, and their number of horses, who have no veterinary surgeons, but just barn bosses.
The dogs holding the bottoms in place are adjustable, and arc operated by another set of offset-shafts passing through oblong holes or eyes cast in these dogs. When the lever operating this shaft is in the locking-notch, the dogs cannot be released. When the lever is pulled forwards, the offset in the shafts pulls the dogs, so that the bottoms are released, causing them to fall downwards and outwards, describing an arc or circle which is governed by the offset-shafts running lengthwise of the said bottoms. The springs from which the dogs are suspended are strong enough to grasp the bottoms when they are thrown up, just as a door latches. Everything connected with this wagon is adjustable, and, as there are no cables, chains or gears, it is very durable. It is a great time-saver, as any load can be dumped in one or two seconds. The box is suspended by channel irons bolted through the sides and running to each bolster. One-half of the load can he dumped, if desired.
