CARELESS INSPECTION AT BRIDGEPORT.

CARELESS INSPECTION AT BRIDGEPORT.

Mayor Reynolds of Bridgeport, Conn., says he is never surprised to hear of any accident to buildings in his city, as there are now about 200 buildings in course of erection there, and it is impossible for the building inspector to make a proper examination of each building The mayor is in favor of appointing assistant inspectors and has tried to secure the passing of proper building laws, but without success. He says the city has no funds with which to pay the salary of assistant inspectors, if any were appointed. That the McNamara building, burned recently, was not properly inspected is admitted by the building inspector who was unaware that the floor joists had not been fire-cut. Adjusters are agreed that they have never before seen such a complete wreck with so little tire. There was about $12,000 of insurance in stock companies on contents, and $3,000 in Massachusetts mutuals on the building.

Chicago has the backing of Mayor Bitsse for its proposed high-pressure system down town.
