Brockville Business Building Damaged
Fire which had gained considerable headway before it was discovered did damage to a four story stone building with brick and wood partition walls and occupied by a drug store, medecine factory and offices in the centre of Brockville, Ont., on June 2. The fire had its origin in the basement and rapidly extended up an elevator shaft that was constructed of wood so that the building was on fire from cellar to attic through the elevator shaft when Chief G. M. Brady arrived in command of six paid firemen and 14 volunteers and the following apparatus: One combination chemical and hose wagon, one hose wagon and one ladder truck. The alarm was sent in, over the Gamewell system, at 4.10 a. m., and the fire burned six hours. Three hydrants, 250 and 300 feet apart were available and six hydrant streams were thrown, the water pressure at hydrants being 90 pounds. 1,500 feet of hose was in use. The damage to the building, valued at $40,000, was $20,000, while $12,000 damage was done to the contents, valued at $27,0000.
