ADDITIONAL FIRE PROTECTION AT PATERSON.
The inspector of the National Board of Fire Underwriters having again investigated the conditions for fire protection at Paterson, N. J., has made five recommendations for its improvement as follows; (1) Two additional engine companies should be organised, equipped with a firstclass steamer, hose wagon, and 1,000 or 1,200 feet of hose; (2) four firstclass steamers should replace two of the present inadequate engines, which latter can be used for emergency services; (3) four firstclass modern constructed hose wagons should be obtained, each with a carrying capacity of 1,000 to 1,200 feet of two and one-half-inch diameter fire hose and necessary service equipment; (4) at least 5,000 feet of additional firstclass fire hose should be obtained, so as to allow each company two lines of 800 feet for a change of hose after each service fire and possible emergency use; (5) one firstclass aerial hook and ladder truck should be obtained, fully equipped with one seventy-five-foot extension and necessary lengths of ordinary service ladders and appliances, to replace the old apparatus now in use.
James K. Thomas, a contractor of Annapolis, Md., has been arrested on the charge of burning a house at Arnold’s Station that had been intrusted to him to repair and remodel. Thomas, who is said to have taken out a building insurance on the house, instead of turning in and helping to extinguish the flames as the workmen did. jumped on the railway train on which all were about to go at the moment, and left for Baltimore. His employes had complained that they were not being paid, and the contract had been taken from him. In default of $1,000 bail, he was committed to jail.
