A Ewing (NJ) police detective pulled a dog from a burning home Thursday morning, the police department said.
Det. Julia Caldwell, who was among the police officers who responded to a 9 a.m. house fire on Browning Avenue, entered the home after residents who’d just fled the smoky house said a dog was still inside, police said.
Caldwell found the pet and rescued it with assistance from patrol officers. She suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, after being treated by township EMS at the scene. She is expected to remain hospitalized for a few days for observation, officials told NJ Advance Media Thursday evening.
Nobody else was injured in the fire, police said.
Ewing fire companies, with an assist from Trenton and Hamilton fire companies, extinguished the blaze. A fire marshal said the fire was not suspicious. The American Red Cross is assisting those who lived in the home.
