Two Underground Explosions in Downtown Boston Damage Buildings, Injure One

The explosions happened near 10 High St., shattering the windows of the building, the Boston Fire Dept. said onTwitter. The buildings at 10 High St. and 175 Federal St. have since been evacuated.

“We had smoke issuing from two manholes — one directly in front of 10 High St. and the other at the corner of Federal and High. It turned out that it may have been an overpressure situation, so we investigated all floors of the building, especially the basement area, to detect for carbon monoxide,” Boston Fire Department Deputy Chief Brian Tully said, according toWCVB.

A Twitter user by the name of Michael Walsh uploaded a photo of the scene. The photo was taken at 9:08 a.m. Thursday.

Companies are checking the surrounding buildings for any smoke and are checking for elevated levels of carbon monoxide, the fire department’stweetsaid.

One person was taken to a hospital by Boston EMS. The victim’s injuries have not been released.

Eversource MA and National Grid US are on thescene to determine the cause of the explosion. Tully said they suspect it might be due to overpressure, but it has not been confirmed.
