A Remarkable Rise to Power

He is a self-made man, who has won his present responsible position through hard and earnest work from the lowest rung of the ladder to the top. Being equipped with _____plendid business qualifications, which were apparent from the first day he entered the Homestead Steel Works, thence through a varied and successful career, he has become head of one of the largest and most prosperous engineering concerns in the world. The following shows the rapid progress of President Dickson:

W illiam Brown Dickson, president of the International Steam Pump Company, was born in Pittsburgh. Pa., on Nov. 6, 1865. son of John and Mary A. (McConnel) Dickson, and was educated in the public schools of Pittsburgh. Pa. He commenced work at an early age. and in 1881 secured employment at the Homestead Steel Works, which had just been built and placed in operation. After several years passed at manual labor in the mills he was transferred to the office, acting at first in a clerical capacity and subsequently receiving rapid promotion through various grades up to that of assistant to president and managing director of the Carnegie Steel Company. He became a junior partner in the Carnegie Steel Company. Limited, in 1889. On the formation of the United States Steel Corporation in 1901 he accompanied C. M. Schwab to New York as assistant to the president of the United States Steel Corporation, and later was elected a vice-president of that corporation, which position he held until May 1, 1911, when he resigned in order to retire from active business. Mr. Dickson was elected president of the International Steam Pump Company on Nov. 10, 1912. He succeded the late Benjamin Guggenheim, who went dowm on the Titanic. Those who are familiar with Mr. Dickson’s record in the steel industry do not hesitate to say that the International Steam Pump Company has made a wise selection.
