A Portage La Prarie Fire.
Portage La Prairie, Man., is a growing city, with many wooden buildings within its fire lint its. In one of these a 50-ft.., 2-story, 20-year-old, non-sprinklered roundhouse, situated in the northwest portion of the city, belonging to the Canadian Pacific railway—forming part of the shops— caught fire somewhere about the centre, owing to the explosion of a lamp. When the department, under Chief Thomas Kilkenny, reached the scene, the whole building was one mass of flames, so much so that it was impossible to do much. All the apparatus brought to bear upon the blaze was one Seagrave horse wagon, which was at once connected with the one available 6-in. double hydrant set on an 8-in. main, the supply being direct pumping direct. The pressure was J25 lb. Only one stream was thrown through 900 ft. of cotton and 300 ft. of rubber hose, with a 1-in. controling nozzle. The building stood alone on prairie land, with an 8-in. main in front.
